May 26, 2020- A new study has found that the painkiller celecoxib, marketed by Novartis AG, has the potential to cause permanent damage if left untreated.
The study, published online Tuesday in, has shown that celecoxib causes damage to the colon and the small intestine.
The study, led by researchers at Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania, included 7,022 people with chronic pain. The researchers found that celecoxib caused permanent damage in the colon, stomach and other parts of the body.
The damage to the colon and the small intestine occurred when the drugs were used to treat arthritis, but the damage to the stomach continued even after the drugs were stopped.
The researchers found that celecoxib caused damage to the colon, stomach and small intestine in just under a month. They also found that it also caused damage in the colon and stomach that occurred in the same period.
The research was published in the March 2018 issue of theJournal of the American Medical Association.
"Our findings are consistent with previous reports, which have shown that celecoxib causes damage to the colon and the small intestine, but the exact mechanism of the damage remains unknown," said lead author and lead author John D. Kuchek, M. D., from the Center for Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in Temple, Pennsylvania.
The researchers also noted that the damage to the colon and the small intestine occurred when the drugs were used to treat arthritis, but the damage to the stomach continued even after the drugs were stopped.
Celecoxib had no effect on the other parts of the body that are affected by the drugs.
"It is important to note that this study does not establish the causal link between celecoxib and this other chronic pain condition," Kuchek said. "The results of this study, combined with the findings from the previous research, should prompt further investigation of the risk of permanent damage to the colon and stomach."
